WUFO

Founded in 1961 after Gordon McLendon relocated his 1080 AM frequency from WYSL, the station adopted the call letters WUFO—short for "WU-FO in Buffalo"—a name chosen for its catchy Buffalo connection. Leonard Walk, who acquired the original 1080 frequency, launched WUFO on November 2, 1962, with legendary Cleveland DJ Eddie O'Jay as its first on-air voice, introducing a rhythm and blues format.

Over the decades, WUFO has been a launching pad for some of the most influential African-American radio personalities. Among its notable alumni are Frankie Crocker, Gary Byrd, Jerry Bledsoe, Thelka McCall and her son Dwayne "Dancer" Donovan, Don Allen, Don Mullins, Sunny Jim Kelsey, Al Brisbane, Jimmy Lyons, H.F. Stone, Chucky T, Al Parker, Gary Lanier, Kelly Carson, Darcel Howell Mouzon, brothers David Wilson and Mark Vann, Lee Pettigrew, Dwayne "Landers" Cumberlander, and "The Discotizer" Keith Pollard, with the station continuing to cultivate legendary talent.

In 1973, Sheridan Broadcasting Corporation acquired Dynamic Broadcasting, making WUFO the first and only African American-owned station in Western New York. Today, the station broadcasts an urban contemporary playlist on 1080 AM.
